Here are six technologies the New Media Consortium predicts will be tapped for higher education.
- User-created content: User-created content such as blogs, vlogs, wikibooks and clips will be integrated into curriculums and seen as a rich educational resource.
- Social networking: The report urges universities to create social networking sites similar to MySpace and Facebook,
- Mobile phones: With its numerous digital functions and instant access, "these little devices will be as much a part of education as a bookbag."
- Virtual worlds: Allows students to collaborate, explore, role-play and create new experiences. More and more universities hold classes in virtual environments.
- The new scholarship and emerging forms of publication: How scholars do research and publish their work is changing slowly. Some professors fear blogging and podcasts will infringe on their work; others see a tool to circulate ideas and theories.
- Multiplayer educational gaming: Already used on some campuses, educational games promote learning and will become more popular as production kinks are ironed out.
